Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Agnuside is an iridoid glycoside compound primarily found in the fruits of Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chaste tree or chasteberry. The use of chasteberry preparations, and by extension agnuside, to support female reproductive health and specifically the uterus, is rooted in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and the Mediterranean region. Historically, Vitex agnus-castus has been used to help manage menstrual disorders, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other issues related to female hormonal balance. The traditional rationale is that agnuside and related compounds may exert dopaminergic effects, influencing prolactin secretion and thereby indirectly affecting reproductive hormone balance.

Modern scientific studies have mostly focused on chasteberry extracts as a whole rather than isolated agnuside. Some clinical trials suggest that chasteberry extracts may be helpful for PMS and cyclical breast pain, likely due to their effects on the endocrine system. However, evidence specifically isolating agnuside for direct support of uterine health is limited. The rating of 3 reflects the solid traditional basis for use, moderate clinical support for the whole extract, and a lack of extensive research on agnuside alone. More robust clinical studies are needed to clarify the role of agnuside in uterine health specifically.
