Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Asoka (Saraca asoca) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting female reproductive health, particularly the uterus. Traditionally, the bark of the Asoka tree is used to treat various gynecological conditions such as menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and leucorrhea (vaginal discharge). Ancient texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Asoka as a key remedy for uterine disorders, and it is often included in classical Ayurvedic formulations for menstrual health.

Modern scientific studies on Asoka are limited, but some preliminary research supports its traditional use. A few animal and in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Saraca asoca bark may have uterotonic, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic effects, which could help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce excessive bleeding. However, large-scale human clinical trials are lacking, so the evidence remains largely traditional with some scientific plausibility but not robust validation. Therefore, while Asoka is widely used in traditional medicine for uterine support and some scientific data supports this use, the strength of evidence is moderate and primarily rooted in traditional practices.
