Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black Haw (Viburnum prunifolium) has a long history of traditional use in supporting the uterus and female reproductive system. Native American tribes and later 19th-century herbalists used Black Haw as a remedy for menstrual cramps, uterine spasms, and to prevent miscarriage. Traditional uses were based on its antispasmodic properties, which were thought to help relax uterine muscles and ease painful contractions. Early herbal texts and eclectic physicians in North America often recommended Black Haw for threatened miscarriage and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).

Despite substantial traditional usage, modern scientific validation is limited. Some phytochemical studies have identified compounds such as viburnin, salicin, and various tannins in Black Haw, which could theoretically contribute antispasmodic or sedative effects. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the efficacy and safety for uterine health have not been established by contemporary scientific standards. Thus, while there is a solid tradition of using Black Haw to support the uterus, the evidence remains primarily anecdotal and historical, with only limited pharmacological investigation to date.
