Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Casticin is a naturally occurring flavonoid compound found primarily in the fruit and leaves of the Vitex agnus-castus plant, commonly known as chaste tree. Historically, extracts of chaste tree, which contain casticin among other constituents, have been used in traditional medicine, especially in Europe and the Mediterranean, for supporting women’s reproductive health. Traditional uses include alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), regulating menstrual cycles, and supporting uterine health. The rationale behind its use is based largely on empirical observations rather than rigorous scientific studies. While some modern research has examined the effects of Vitex agnus-castus extracts on reproductive hormones and menstrual symptoms, casticin itself has not been singled out as the principal active compound responsible for these effects. There is limited preclinical evidence suggesting that casticin may modulate hormone levels or influence uterine tissue, but such evidence is not robust or directly related to human uterine health. Therefore, the use of casticin to support the uterus is primarily justified by traditional usage rather than strong scientific validation.
