Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or "musta" in Ayurveda, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these traditions, it is often employed to support female reproductive health, including the uterus and menstrual cycle. Ayurvedic texts describe Cyperus rotundus as beneficial for regulating menstruation, alleviating menstrual pain, and promoting uterine health, often referring to it as a "uterine tonic." TCM uses it (as Xiang Fu) to regulate Qi in gynecological disorders such as dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested possible anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and estrogenic activities of Cyperus rotundus extracts, which could theoretically benefit uterine health or menstrual symptoms. Yet, these findings are preliminary and insufficient for establishing clinical efficacy or safety. No robust human clinical trials specifically evaluating its effects on the uterus or reproductive health have been conducted. Thus, while the traditional use is strong, scientific evidence remains weak, justifying a moderate evidence score.
