Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus, particularly Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or "mustak"), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these traditions, Cyperus species are often used to manage gynecological issues, including menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and to support general uterine health. For example, in Ayurveda, Cyperus rotundus is considered a balancing herb for the female reproductive system and is frequently included in formulations aimed at regulating menstruation and alleviating menstrual pain.

Despite its extensive traditional use, scientific validation for these effects remains limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest Cyperus rotundus may have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and hormone-modulating properties, which could theoretically contribute to its effects on the uterus. However, there are very few clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in supporting uterine health in humans, and the available studies are generally of low methodological quality or involve small sample sizes. Therefore, while the use of Cyperus for supporting the uterus is well-rooted in tradition, robust scientific evidence is lacking, and its effectiveness for this purpose has not been conclusively demonstrated in modern research.
