Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flax (Linum usitatissimum), particularly its seeds, is supported by scientific evidence for benefits related to the uterus, primarily due to its high content of lignans (phytoestrogens) and omega-3 fatty acids. Several studies have investigated flaxseed’s effects on hormone balance and menstrual health. The lignans in flaxseed can have mild estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects, depending on the hormonal environment, which may help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate mild menopausal symptoms. Some research has shown that flaxseed consumption can modestly reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes in menopausal women.

Regarding uterine health, a few small studies and animal models suggest that flaxseed may help reduce the risk or severity of endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the uterine lining) by modulating estrogen metabolism. Additionally, there is preliminary evidence that flaxseed may help reduce the risk of hormone-dependent cancers, including uterine cancer, through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

However, robust clinical trials specifically exploring flaxseed’s effect on uterine disorders (such as fibroids or endometriosis) are limited, and most evidence comes from observational studies, animal research, or studies on related hormone-driven conditions. Thus, while scientific support exists, more targeted research is needed to confirm its direct role in supporting uterine health.
