Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Labisia pumila, commonly known as Kacip Fatimah, is a medicinal herb traditionally used in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries to support women's reproductive health, particularly the uterus. Its use is deeply rooted in Malay traditional medicine, where it is administered to women to promote uterine health, ease childbirth, regulate menstruation, and aid postpartum recovery. The traditional preparation often involves decoctions or infusions of the roots and leaves.

Scientific research on Labisia pumila has increased over recent decades. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that extracts of the plant may exert phytoestrogenic effects, modulate hormones, and offer antioxidant benefits that could theoretically support uterine tissue. However, robust human clinical trials are limited, and most available studies are preliminary or observational in nature. Thus, while the herb’s use is widely accepted in traditional practices and supported by some preclinical data, comprehensive scientific validation is not yet established. As such, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for uterine health is primarily traditional, with moderate support from early scientific investigations.
