For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for women’s health and the support of the uterus and reproductive system. Historically, it has been used to help manage heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual cramps, and to tone the uterus after childbirth. The astringent properties of Lady’s Mantle, attributed to its tannin content, are believed by herbalists to help “tighten” and strengthen uterine tissue, which may be why it was traditionally recommended for issues such as menorrhagia (heavy periods) and as a postpartum tonic.
However, there is a notable lack of rigorous scientific studies validating these traditional uses. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on centuries-old herbal texts rather than controlled clinical trials. While some in vitro studies suggest mild anti-inflammatory and astringent effects due to its polyphenolic compounds, these findings have not been directly correlated with uterine health in humans. As such, while Lady's Mantle continues to be used in herbal practice for uterine support, its evidence base is largely traditional and not supported by robust scientific data.
