Evidence supporting the use of: Osthole
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Osthole is a natural coumarin derivative primarily found in the plant Cnidium monnieri, which has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, the herb containing osthole is commonly prescribed for gynecological conditions such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, and to support the overall health of the uterus. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed ability to "invigorate the kidney and strengthen yang," which are believed to underpin reproductive health in TCM theory.
Scientific research on osthole’s effects on the uterus is limited but includes some animal and in vitro studies. Some of these studies suggest osthole may have effects on smooth muscle relaxation and mild estrogen-like activity, which could theoretically influence uterine function. However, these findings are preliminary and not robustly validated in human clinical trials. The bulk of the evidence supporting its use for uterine health remains rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. As such, osthole’s use for supporting the uterus is justified by its historical and traditional applications, with only weak or indirect scientific support at this time.
