Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium or Hedeoma pulegioides) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in Western and folk traditions, where it has been employed to support female reproductive health, including the uterus. Historically, pennyroyal was used as an emmenagogue—an herb believed to stimulate menstrual flow—and was sometimes used to attempt to induce abortion or regulate menstrual cycles. These uses were based on empirical tradition rather than scientific validation. The primary constituents thought to be responsible are volatile oils such as pulegone, which can stimulate uterine contractions. However, pennyroyal is known to be highly toxic, particularly to the liver, and can cause severe poisoning or death even at relatively low doses. Modern scientific studies have not validated its safety or efficacy for supporting uterine health, and the risks far outweigh any potential benefit. Consequently, pennyroyal is not recommended for this purpose in contemporary herbal medicine. The evidence supporting its use is almost entirely traditional, and there is a lack of modern clinical research to justify its use in this context.
