Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in East Asian practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is frequently used to "cool the blood," stop bleeding, and reduce inflammation. In the context of supporting the uterus, Sanguisorba officinalis (Chinese: Di Yu) is traditionally used to treat excessive menstrual bleeding, uterine hemorrhage, and other gynecological conditions linked to blood loss or inflammation. The root is most commonly employed for these purposes, often in combination with other herbs.

However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for uterine health is primarily anecdotal and based on centuries of traditional use, rather than rigorous scientific validation. While some laboratory studies have explored Sanguisorba's anti-inflammatory, astringent, and hemostatic properties, there are few, if any, clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy or safety for uterine or gynecological indications in humans. As a result, the use of Sanguisorba for the uterus is best described as traditional, with a modest evidence rating, largely due to the absence of modern scientific studies backing these claims.
