Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Squaw Vine (Mitchella repens) has a long history of use in traditional North American herbalism, particularly among Indigenous peoples and 19th-century herbalists. It has been commonly classified as a "uterine tonic," with historical records describing its use to support the female reproductive system, especially during pregnancy and childbirth. Traditional midwives and herbalists often recommended Squaw Vine, sometimes in combination with other herbs, to prepare for labor and ease childbirth, as well as for menstrual complaints.

However, the evidence for these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation. There are very few, if any, clinical studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of Squaw Vine for uterine or reproductive health in humans. Phytochemical analyses have identified some potentially bioactive compounds, but their specific effects on the uterus have not been confirmed in rigorous scientific research. Because of this lack of modern evidence, the use of Squaw Vine for uterine support cannot be considered scientifically validated, but it remains part of traditional herbal practice.
