Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) root bark, known as "Mu Dan Pi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use to support the female reproductive system, including the uterus. In TCM, Tree Peony is considered to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and "move blood stasis," often prescribed in formulas aimed at alleviating menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea (painful periods), irregular menstruation, and symptoms associated with uterine fibroids or endometriosis. Its traditional role is to promote blood circulation and address "blood stasis," a concept in TCM equated with impaired blood flow, which may relate to certain gynecological conditions.

Scientifically, Tree Peony contains compounds such as paeonol and paeonoside, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects in preclinical studies. Some animal studies suggest these compounds may help modulate uterine contractions and reduce inflammation. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating the effect of Tree Peony on uterine health are lacking. Thus, while the herb’s use for uterine health is well-established within traditional systems and partially supported by biochemical plausibility, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to confirm efficacy or safety for these indications by modern standards.
