Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Lactobacillus is justified for use in supporting the vaginal body system based on scientific evidence. The vagina’s normal microbiota is dominated by Lactobacillus species, which play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy vaginal environment. They do this primarily by producing lactic acid, which keeps the vaginal pH acidic (around 3.8-4.5). This acidic environment inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Disruptions in vaginal Lactobacillus populations are associated with conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections.

Numerous studies have explored the use of oral and intravaginal Lactobacillus-containing probiotics for restoring the vaginal microbiota and reducing recurrence rates of infections. For instance, randomized controlled trials have shown that certain strains, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14, can help recolonize the vagina and support the prevention and treatment of bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, especially when used alongside standard treatments.

While the effectiveness may vary depending on the strain and delivery method, the overall evidence supports the beneficial role of Lactobacillus in vaginal health, justifying its use in this context. However, more high-quality, large-scale studies are needed to optimize strains, dosing, and treatment duration.
