Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus crispatus
For the body system: Vagina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Lactobacillus crispatus is a well-studied probiotic species that naturally dominates the healthy vaginal microbiome in many women. Its presence is associated with lower rates of bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infections, and sexually transmitted infections. Scientific studies, including clinical trials and observational research, provide strong evidence that L. crispatus helps maintain an acidic vaginal pH (generally <4.5), largely through the production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, both of which inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Several randomized controlled trials have investigated the use of L. crispatus as a probiotic for vaginal health, particularly in the prevention and treatment of recurrent BV. Notably, a 2019 phase 2b clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that vaginal administration of L. crispatus after antibiotic therapy for BV significantly reduced recurrence rates compared to placebo. Additional studies have shown that women with a vaginal microbiome dominated by L. crispatus are less susceptible to urogenital infections and experience fewer disruptions in vaginal health.
Based on current scientific literature, the use of L. crispatus to support the vaginal body system is justified and supported by moderate to strong evidence, especially for the prevention of BV recurrence and overall maintenance of a healthy vaginal ecosystem.
