Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus kefiri
For the body system: Vagina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus kefiri is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in kefir, a fermented milk beverage. Its use to support vaginal health is grounded in emerging scientific evidence, although the body of research is still relatively limited compared to other Lactobacillus species such as L. crispatus or L. rhamnosus. Some clinical and laboratory studies have demonstrated that L. kefiri can adhere to vaginal epithelial cells, inhibit the growth of common urogenital pathogens such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, and produce lactic acid, thus contributing to the maintenance of normal vaginal pH and microbiota balance. For example, a 2015 study by Carasi et al. (Beneficial Microbes) showed L. kefiri strains could antagonize pathogens and modulate immune responses in vitro.
However, direct clinical trials in women are sparse, and most research is preclinical or observational. The use of L. kefiri for vaginal health is sometimes extrapolated from its general probiotic properties and its efficacy in gastrointestinal health. Some probiotic supplements now include L. kefiri for vaginal support, reflecting growing interest, but robust human data is still lacking. In summary, there is early scientific support for the use of Lactobacillus kefiri for vaginal health, but more randomized controlled trials in humans are needed to firmly establish its effectiveness.
