Evidence supporting the use of: Lactococcus rhamnosus
For the body system: Vagina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Lactobacillus rhamnosus (formerly Lactococcus rhamnosus) is widely studied for its role in supporting vaginal health. This probiotic species is naturally found in the vaginal microbiota and is known for producing lactic acid, which helps maintain a low vaginal pH and inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that supplementation with certain strains of L. rhamnosus, such as L. rhamnosus GR-1, can help restore and maintain a healthy vaginal flora, particularly following disturbances like bacterial vaginosis (BV) or yeast infections. For example, a 2015 review in the journal Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease concluded that oral or intravaginal use of L. rhamnosus GR-1 in combination with other lactobacilli could help prevent recurrence of BV and urogenital infections. However, efficacy can depend on the specific strain and delivery method. While not every strain of L. rhamnosus is equally effective, the overall body of evidence supports its use as an adjunct to standard therapy for vaginal health. Thus, the use of L. rhamnosus for supporting the vaginal body system is primarily justified by scientific research.
