Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Yam, particularly wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), has a long history of use in traditional medicine for women's health, particularly for supporting the reproductive system and alleviating symptoms associated with menopause and menstrual discomfort. In various cultures, preparations made from yam roots have been used as a natural remedy for vaginal dryness, menstrual cramps, and menopausal symptoms, based on the traditional belief that compounds within the plant, such as diosgenin, could influence hormone balance. However, scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited. While diosgenin can be chemically converted into progesterone in laboratory settings, this conversion does not occur in the human body when yam or its extracts are consumed orally. Clinical studies examining the effects of yam or wild yam creams on menopausal or vaginal symptoms are few and generally show little to no significant benefit over placebo. Thus, though yam has a well-established traditional use for supporting the vagina and related aspects of women's health, robust scientific validation for these effects is lacking. The evidence rating reflects its strong traditional use but limited scientific support.
