Centella Triterpenes for Varicose Veins: Scientific Evidence
Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu Kola, contains active compounds called triterpenes (notably asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid). These triterpenes have been investigated for their potential benefits in venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Several clinical studies, primarily from Europe and Asia, have evaluated standardized extracts of Centella triterpenes (often labeled as TTFCA: total triterpenic fraction of Centella asiatica) for this condition.
Research suggests that Centella triterpenes may improve microcirculation, strengthen the walls of veins, reduce capillary permeability, and enhance connective tissue tone. Randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with Centella triterpenes can reduce symptoms such as leg heaviness, swelling (edema), and discomfort in people with chronic venous insufficiency, a key precursor to varicose veins. For instance, a meta-analysis published in Phytomedicine (2001) concluded that Centella extracts significantly improve microcirculatory parameters and clinical symptoms compared to placebo. Several studies report a reduction in ankle edema and improvements in subjective symptoms after 4-8 weeks of use.
However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate: many studies are small, of short duration, or have unclear risk of bias. Most research uses standardized pharmaceutical preparations, not dietary supplements. Still, the results are consistent enough to support a reasonable level of scientific validation for Centella triterpenes as supportive therapy for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. More high-quality, large-scale trials are needed for definitive conclusions.
