Pine bark extract, particularly standardized forms such as Pycnogenol®, has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting vascular health, including the management of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. The active compounds in pine bark extract are proanthocyanidins, potent antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective properties. Multiple randomized controlled trials and clinical studies have demonstrated that pine bark extract can reduce symptoms associated with varicose veins, such as leg swelling (edema), heaviness, and discomfort. For example, a study published in "Angiology" (2002) reported significant improvements in edema and microcirculatory function in patients taking Pycnogenol® compared to placebo. Other research suggests that pine bark extract may strengthen capillary walls, improve venous tone, and decrease capillary permeability—mechanisms relevant to varicose vein pathology.

Despite these positive findings, limitations exist, including relatively small sample sizes, short study durations, and industry sponsorships for some trials. Meta-analyses and reviews acknowledge the promise of pine bark extract, but also call for larger, independent studies to fully establish efficacy and long-term safety. Overall, while not yet a first-line medical therapy, pine bark extract has a scientific basis for its use in supporting varicose vein health, and may be considered as an adjunct to standard treatments under professional guidance.
