Bioflavonoids, a diverse group of plant-derived polyphenolic compounds, are commonly used to support vascular health, particularly for the veins. Scientific evidence suggests that certain bioflavonoids, such as diosmin, hesperidin, and rutin, can benefit venous circulation. These compounds are known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and capillary-protective effects. Clinical studies, especially in Europe, have demonstrated that micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) containing diosmin and hesperidin improves symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), such as leg swelling, heaviness, and pain. A number of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have found moderate evidence for symptom relief and improved venous tone with these bioflavonoids. For example, a 2012 Cochrane review concluded that flavonoids may reduce edema and improve symptoms in patients with CVI, although methodological limitations and heterogeneity in the studies were noted. The mechanisms proposed include strengthening capillary walls, decreasing capillary permeability, and reducing inflammation. While these effects are not universal to all bioflavonoids and more robust, high-quality research is still needed, the use of specific bioflavonoids for venous support is supported by a moderate level of scientific validation, especially in the context of CVI and related venous disorders.
