Bioflavonoids, a group of plant-derived compounds with antioxidant properties, are often used to support venous health, particularly in the management of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and related conditions such as varicose veins and hemorrhoids. There is a moderate body of scientific evidence supporting the use of certain bioflavonoids—especially a subset known as "micronized purified flavonoid fraction" (MPFF), which typically includes diosmin and hesperidin—for improving venous tone, reducing capillary permeability, and alleviating symptoms like leg swelling and heaviness.

Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that bioflavonoids can reduce leg edema, pain, and other symptoms associated with venous insufficiency. The proposed mechanisms include strengthening blood vessel walls, reducing inflammation, and improving lymphatic drainage. The European Society for Vascular Surgery and other clinical guidelines list MPFF as an option for symptomatic relief in CVI.

However, while the evidence is stronger for specific flavonoids like diosmin and hesperidin, the term "mixed bioflavonoids" encompasses a broader range of compounds, not all of which have been studied as rigorously. Thus, while the use of bioflavonoids for venous support is scientifically justified to a moderate extent, especially for certain types, more research is needed to clarify the benefits of less-studied flavonoids and mixed formulations.
