Evidence supporting the use of: Citrulline nitrate
For the body system: Veins
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Citrulline nitrate is used to support the veins and overall vascular system, primarily due to its ability to enhance nitric oxide (NO) production in the body. L-citrulline is a naturally occurring amino acid that serves as a precursor to L-arginine, which is then converted into nitric oxide—a crucial molecule for vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). Enhanced nitric oxide levels can improve endothelial function, promote better blood flow, and reduce vascular resistance, which collectively support vein health and circulation.
Several clinical studies have shown that L-citrulline supplementation can increase plasma L-arginine levels and nitric oxide production, leading to improved endothelial function and blood flow, especially during exercise. The addition of nitrate may further boost nitric oxide bioavailability, as dietary nitrates are also converted into NO via an independent pathway. This dual mechanism potentially offers additive or synergistic effects for vascular support.
However, while there is moderate scientific evidence for the vascular benefits of L-citrulline and dietary nitrates separately, direct research on the combination as "citrulline nitrate" is limited. Most existing studies focus on exercise performance, blood pressure, and endothelial function, with some showing improvements in blood flow and vascular health markers. Overall, the evidence justifies a moderate rating, reflecting promising but not yet definitive support for citrulline nitrate’s role in vein health.
