Rating (out of 5): 4
Diosmetin is a flavonoid aglycone derived from diosmin, which is commonly found in citrus fruits. Its primary use in the context of supporting the veins and vascular health is based on its bioactive properties, particularly as a venoactive agent. Clinical and preclinical studies have demonstrated that diosmetin and its precursor diosmin exhibit venotonic, vasoprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects. These compounds are thought to improve venous tone, reduce capillary permeability, and enhance lymphatic drainage.
Diosmin (which is metabolized in the human body to diosmetin) is a well-established therapy for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), hemorrhoids, and varicose veins, with multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses supporting its efficacy. Diosmetin itself has been shown in laboratory studies to inhibit inflammatory mediators, protect the vascular endothelium, and reduce oxidative stress, which may contribute to its beneficial effects on the venous system.
While most clinical evidence comes from formulations containing diosmin (often combined with hesperidin), the conversion of diosmin to diosmetin in the body underpins the relevance of diosmetin. Regulatory bodies in Europe recognize micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF, containing diosmin and hesperidin) as a standard treatment for venous disorders. Thus, there is scientific validation for the use of diosmetin (mainly via its precursor diosmin) in supporting vein health, although more direct clinical studies on diosmetin itself would further strengthen the evidence base.
