Flavanones, a subclass of flavonoids found predominantly in citrus fruits (such as hesperidin and naringin), are used to support the veins and overall vascular health based on growing scientific evidence. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have shown that flavanones, especially hesperidin (often combined with diosmin), can improve symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition characterized by poor venous return and varicose veins. These compounds have been shown to enhance venous tone, reduce capillary permeability, and decrease inflammation. Mechanistically, flavanones exert antioxidant effects, inhibit leukocyte adhesion and migration, and stabilize capillary endothelium, all of which contribute to improved vascular function.

A key example is the use of micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF), a formulation containing diosmin and hesperidin, which is widely prescribed in Europe for the management of CVI and hemorrhoidal disease. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that MPFF significantly reduces leg swelling, discomfort, and heaviness compared to placebo. Furthermore, hesperidin and related flavanones are included in clinical guidelines in some countries for the treatment of venous disorders.

While the majority of studies focus on specific flavanones rather than the entire class, the overall scientific consensus supports their beneficial role in venous health, justifying their use based on moderate to strong evidence.
