Evidence supporting the use of: Hesperidin methyl chalcone
For the body system: Veins
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Hesperidin methyl chalcone is a flavonoid derivative commonly found in citrus fruits. It is widely used in Europe and some other regions as a venotonic agent—that is, to support the health of the veins and improve venous circulation. The scientific basis for its use primarily relates to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and vasoprotective properties. Several clinical studies and reviews, especially in the context of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), hemorrhoids, and microvascular disorders, have demonstrated that hesperidin methyl chalcone, often in combination with other flavonoids such as diosmin, can reduce symptoms like leg swelling, heaviness, and discomfort. The mechanism of action is thought to involve strengthening capillary resistance, reducing capillary permeability, and improving lymphatic drainage.
However, while the evidence is supportive, most studies evaluate combinations of flavonoids rather than hesperidin methyl chalcone alone, and the quality of evidence varies—ranging from moderate to low due to study design limitations. Nonetheless, its use is recognized in pharmacopeias and clinical guidelines in some countries for symptomatic relief of CVI and hemorrhoidal disease. Thus, while there is scientific grounding for its use in supporting the veins, further high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials would be beneficial to clarify its individual efficacy and safety profile.
