Lumbrokinase is an enzyme complex extracted from earthworms, particularly Eisenia fetida. It is primarily known for its fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) properties. Scientific studies, mostly in China and some in other countries, have demonstrated that lumbrokinase can enhance fibrinolysis by directly breaking down fibrin, the main protein component of blood clots, and by promoting the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, which further aids clot resolution. This mechanism is relevant to the health of the veins and the venous system because blood clot formation (thrombosis) in the veins can lead to conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and chronic venous insufficiency.

Some clinical trials and animal studies suggest that oral lumbrokinase may help reduce blood viscosity and prevent or treat venous thrombotic events. For example, research published in the journal Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis and others have reported decreases in D-dimer and fibrinogen levels, as well as improvements in venous blood flow. However, most studies are relatively small, sometimes lack rigorous controls, and are often published in regional journals. There is a need for larger, well-designed clinical trials to better establish efficacy and safety.

In summary, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting the use of lumbrokinase for supporting the venous system, particularly regarding its anti-thrombotic and blood flow-promoting effects, but further research is warranted.
