Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) extract, often referred to as Pycnogenol®, has been studied for its effects on vascular health, particularly in relation to vein function and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Several clinical trials and systematic reviews have found that standardized extracts of maritime pine bark contain procyanidins and other polyphenolic compounds that exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasoprotective effects. These properties are thought to enhance endothelial function, improve microcirculation, and reduce capillary permeability.

Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that Pycnogenol® supplementation can significantly reduce symptoms associated with CVI, such as leg heaviness, edema (swelling), and pain. A 2012 meta-analysis published in Phytotherapy Research concluded that Pycnogenol® provides significant benefits in managing CVI symptoms and may improve venous tone. Additionally, studies suggest that maritime pine extract may accelerate healing of venous ulcers and improve overall quality of life for those with venous disorders.

While further large-scale studies are warranted to confirm long-term efficacy and safety, the existing body of evidence supports the use of maritime pine extract as an adjunctive therapy for venous health. It is important to note that benefits are most consistently observed with standardized extracts, such as Pycnogenol®, rather than generic pine bark preparations.
