Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), particularly its standardized extract known as Pycnogenol®, has been studied for its effects on venous health. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated its use in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition where the veins have problems sending blood from the legs back to the heart. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, improvement in endothelial function, reduction of capillary permeability, and anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical trials have shown that supplementation can reduce symptoms such as leg heaviness, edema, and pain associated with CVI. For example, a 2012 meta-analysis published in "Phytomedicine" found that Pycnogenol® significantly improved microcirculation and reduced leg swelling in patients with CVI. Additionally, a 2017 Cochrane review concluded that Pycnogenol® may improve symptoms of CVI, though it emphasized the need for higher quality studies. The extract is generally well tolerated, with a good safety profile in short- to medium-term studies. While not universally adopted in conventional medicine, the scientific evidence supports a moderate benefit for venous disorders, especially chronic venous insufficiency, making its use for supporting the veins body system scientifically validated, though not at the highest level of evidence due to methodological limitations and relatively small study sizes.
