Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. Its use to support the veins and vascular system is primarily based on scientific findings rather than longstanding traditional use for this specific purpose. The main mechanism of action attributed to nattokinase is its fibrinolytic (clot-busting) activity, which can help break down fibrin, a protein involved in blood clot formation. This has led to interest in nattokinase as a natural agent to support cardiovascular health, including the health of veins and the prevention of issues like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and chronic venous insufficiency.

Several small clinical studies and animal experiments have shown that nattokinase supplementation may reduce blood viscosity, support healthy blood flow, and decrease certain markers of coagulation. For example, a 2008 study in Nutrition Research found that nattokinase supplementation led to a significant reduction in blood pressure and improved fibrinolytic activity in humans. Other research has suggested benefits in reducing leg swelling and improving circulation, though most studies have been small and short-term.

Despite promising results, robust clinical evidence is limited, and larger, well-controlled trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for vein health specifically. Nattokinase should not be used as a replacement for medical treatments for serious venous conditions.
