Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin K mixed)
For the body system: Veins
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin K is primarily known for its essential role in blood coagulation, but there is also emerging scientific evidence supporting its importance in vascular health, including the maintenance and function of veins. Vitamin K, especially in the form of K2 (menaquinone), helps regulate the activity of matrix Gla-protein (MGP), a key inhibitor of vascular calcification. Research suggests that inadequate vitamin K status can lead to increased vascular calcification, which may negatively affect the integrity and flexibility of blood vessels, including veins. Some studies have shown that vitamin K supplementation can reduce vascular stiffness and slow the progression of calcification, which is indirectly beneficial for venous health. However, while there is a plausible mechanism and some supportive data for vitamin K’s positive effect on the vascular system, direct evidence specifically linking vitamin K supplementation to improvements in venous disorders (such as varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency) is limited. Most clinical research focuses on arterial health rather than veins per se. Nonetheless, given its broader effects on vascular biology, vitamin K is sometimes included in formulations targeting vein health. In summary, while the use of vitamin K for supporting the venous system has a scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, more targeted research is needed to conclusively establish its efficacy for this specific purpose.
