Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cistanche deserticola, known as "Rou Cong Rong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for treating conditions characterized by "wasting and thirsting" (such as fatigue, weakness, and muscle wasting, often associated with chronic illness or aging). In TCM, it is believed to tonify the kidney yang and nourish the blood and essence, which are considered fundamental for vitality and strength. The use of Cistanche deserticola for wasting syndromes is well documented in classical texts, including the Shennong Bencao Jing and subsequent materia medica. These uses are based on centuries of empirical observation rather than on rigorous scientific methodology.

Modern scientific studies investigating Cistanche’s effects on muscle wasting or cachexia are limited. Some pharmacological research has explored its potential antioxidative and anti-fatigue properties, and a few animal studies suggest it may help improve muscle mass or endurance, but these findings are preliminary and lack robust human clinical validation. Thus, while its use for wasting is well-rooted in tradition, current scientific support is weak, and more clinical studies are needed to confirm efficacy for this indication.
