Evidence supporting the use of: Beef Protein
For the health condition: Weight Gain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Beef protein is used as a dietary supplement to support weight gain, particularly in individuals seeking to increase muscle mass through resistance training or to augment caloric and protein intake. The scientific rationale stems from protein’s well-established role in muscle protein synthesis and the maintenance of a positive nitrogen balance, both of which are critical for muscle growth and, by extension, weight gain. Beef protein isolate is a concentrated source of complete protein, providing all essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth.
Several studies on protein supplementation (most commonly with whey, casein, or soy) have shown that increased protein intake, especially when combined with resistance training, contributes to gains in muscle mass and overall weight. Although direct research on beef protein is somewhat limited compared to dairy-based proteins, available studies suggest it is similarly effective for promoting muscle hypertrophy and strength gains. For instance, a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (Sharp et al., 2017) found that beef protein supplementation was as effective as whey protein in supporting increases in lean body mass and strength during resistance training.
Therefore, the use of beef protein to support weight gain is scientifically grounded, particularly for athletes or individuals with higher protein needs. However, the body of evidence is smaller compared to more commonly studied proteins like whey, so the evidence rating is moderate rather than high.
