Evidence supporting the use of: 3-desoxy-7-KETO-DHEA
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
3-desoxy-7-KETO-DHEA (commonly known as 7-Keto-DHEA) is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Unlike DHEA, 7-Keto-DHEA does not convert to sex hormones such as estrogen or testosterone. Its use for weight loss is primarily supported by limited scientific evidence, mostly from small human clinical trials and animal studies.
Several studies have examined whether 7-Keto-DHEA can enhance metabolic rate and promote fat loss. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2000 found that overweight adults taking 200 mg of 7-Keto-DHEA per day for 8 weeks, in conjunction with an exercise and diet regimen, experienced a greater increase in resting metabolic rate and a modest reduction in body weight compared to placebo. Another small study found similar effects on metabolic rate but did not show significant changes in actual weight loss. The proposed mechanism involves upregulation of thermogenic enzymes, leading to increased energy expenditure.
However, the evidence base is weak: most studies are small, short-term, and often funded by supplement manufacturers. Systematic reviews and larger trials are lacking, and the long-term safety profile is not well-established. Therefore, while there is some preliminary scientific support for the use of 7-Keto-DHEA in weight loss, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are low, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
