Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—leucine, isoleucine, and valine—are commonly marketed as supplements that may aid in weight loss, particularly by promoting fat loss or preserving lean muscle mass during calorie restriction. There is some scientific interest in the potential of BCAAs to influence metabolism: for example, leucine has been shown to stimulate muscle protein synthesis and may help reduce muscle loss during dieting. However, the overall scientific evidence supporting BCAA supplementation for weight loss in humans is weak.

Several small studies and animal experiments have suggested possible effects on body composition, but larger, well-designed clinical trials in humans have generally failed to demonstrate significant or consistent benefits for weight loss. Some studies note that BCAAs, when combined with exercise and adequate protein intake, may help preserve lean mass, but this effect is not unique to BCAAs and can be achieved with whole protein sources. Additionally, some research suggests that high circulating levels of BCAAs may be associated with metabolic disorders.

In conclusion, while BCAAs are sometimes used with the aim of supporting weight loss or preserving muscle during dieting, robust scientific validation for their effectiveness in weight loss is lacking. The evidence is insufficient to support routine use of BCAA supplements for this purpose.
