Evidence supporting the use of: Beta Hydroxybutyrate
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Beta Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body produced naturally by the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake, fasting, or ketogenic diets. It is also available as an exogenous supplement, marketed for its potential to support weight loss. The scientific rationale for BHB's use in weight loss is based on its role in promoting ketosis, a metabolic state where the body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Some small clinical studies suggest that exogenous BHB supplements can temporarily elevate blood ketone levels, mimicking the effects of a ketogenic diet and potentially suppressing appetite in the short term. However, robust evidence directly linking BHB supplementation to significant, sustained weight loss in humans is limited. Most published research focuses on endogenous BHB produced during ketosis, rather than supplemental BHB. While BHB may support energy during carbohydrate restriction and help maintain ketosis, meta-analyses and larger trials are lacking. The current body of evidence rates as low to moderate (2 out of 5), indicating that while there is a plausible mechanism and some preliminary data, more rigorous studies are needed to confirm BHB's efficacy for weight loss when taken as a supplement.
