Evidence supporting the use of: Beta-hydroxybutyrate
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body produced naturally in the liver during periods of fasting, prolonged exercise, or carbohydrate restriction, such as when following a ketogenic diet. Its use as a supplement for weight loss has gained popularity in recent years, primarily based on its physiological role during ketosis. Scientific studies indicate that BHB supplementation can elevate blood ketone levels and may slightly suppress appetite, potentially aiding in calorie reduction. However, current research does not robustly support BHB supplementation as an independently effective weight loss intervention. Most studies suggest that ketone supplements like BHB are not as effective as achieving ketosis through diet, and the weight loss observed is largely due to caloric restriction and not a direct effect of BHB itself. Furthermore, human clinical trials are limited and often have small sample sizes or short durations. While BHB may help some individuals adhere to a ketogenic diet or manage appetite transiently, the overall evidence for its direct role in promoting significant or sustained weight loss is weak. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary data, the evidence supporting BHB for weight loss is modest at best.
