Evidence supporting the use of: Black ginger
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black ginger (Kaempferia parviflora) has been traditionally used in Southeast Asian medicine, particularly in Thailand, for a range of health benefits, including enhancement of energy and vitality. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in its potential role in weight management. Several preclinical (animal and cell) studies have suggested that black ginger extract and its active compounds (notably polymethoxyflavones) may influence metabolism by enhancing energy expenditure, increasing fat oxidation, and improving glucose metabolism. For example, some studies in mice have shown that black ginger supplementation can reduce body weight gain and fat accumulation, possibly by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key regulator of energy balance. Small-scale human trials are limited but suggest potential for mild reductions in body fat or improvements in metabolic parameters with supplementation. However, the quality and scale of human evidence remain modest, and more rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, while there is emerging scientific evidence for black ginger’s weight-loss support, it is currently preliminary, and the overall strength of evidence is rated as low to moderate.
