Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica) are often promoted as a weight loss aid, primarily due to their high fiber content and ability to absorb water, forming a gel-like substance in the stomach that can increase satiety. Several small-scale scientific studies have investigated their effects on weight loss and appetite regulation. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that consuming chia seeds may increase feelings of fullness and reduce short-term food intake, which theoretically could support weight management. However, the overall evidence remains limited and mixed. For example, a 2009 study published in Nutrition Research found no significant effect of chia seed supplementation on body weight or composition in overweight adults. Other studies have reported modest benefits, but often with small sample sizes or short durations.

While chia seeds are rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, which are all nutrients associated with better weight management, there is insufficient high-quality, long-term evidence to conclusively support their use as an effective standalone weight loss aid. The current scientific consensus suggests that while chia seeds can be a healthy addition to the diet due to their nutrient profile, their impact on weight loss is likely to be minimal without other dietary and lifestyle changes.
