Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chlorogenic acid, a polyphenol found in coffee beans and various plants, has been studied for its potential effects on weight loss. The interest in chlorogenic acid as a weight loss supplement stems primarily from its presence in green coffee bean extract, which gained popularity after some small clinical studies and media coverage. Scientific evidence for chlorogenic acid’s efficacy in supporting weight loss is limited and mixed. Some randomized controlled trials have suggested modest reductions in body weight and fat accumulation associated with green coffee bean extract supplementation, possibly due to chlorogenic acid’s effects on glucose metabolism and fat absorption. However, these studies are often small, of short duration, or have methodological limitations. A 2011 meta-analysis found a statistically significant difference in body weight for subjects taking green coffee extract compared to placebo, but also noted the poor quality and short duration of most studies. Larger, well-controlled trials are lacking, and the overall clinical relevance of these findings remains uncertain.

In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting chlorogenic acid may aid weight loss, the quality of the evidence is low and effects, if present, are likely to be modest. More rigorous research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this purpose. It is not a traditional remedy for weight loss in herbal medicine systems.
