Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Deoxycholic acid is a secondary bile acid that is FDA-approved specifically for use in injectable form (as Kybella/ATX-101) to reduce moderate to severe submental fat, commonly known as a “double chin.” The mechanism involves cytolysis of adipocytes (fat cells) at the injection site, leading to a reduction in localized fat. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting the use of deoxycholic acid—whether orally or systemically—for general weight loss or obesity management. Its clinical use is strictly localized fat reduction via injection, not total body fat reduction or weight loss. Studies supporting its efficacy and safety pertain only to small, targeted areas and do not translate to broader weight loss applications. Systemic administration is not recommended due to potential toxicity and lack of demonstrated benefit. In summary, while there is robust scientific evidence for deoxycholic acid’s ability to reduce localized subcutaneous fat when injected, there is no evidence for its use in promoting overall weight loss.
