Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flax protein, derived from flaxseed, is sometimes used as a supplement to support weight loss. The foundation for its use is primarily scientific, though the evidence is modest. Flaxseed is high in dietary fiber and plant-based protein, both of which can promote satiety and reduce overall calorie intake—mechanisms relevant to weight management. Several studies involving whole flaxseed or flaxseed fiber have reported reductions in appetite and modest weight loss among overweight individuals. However, most clinical research focuses on whole flaxseed or flaxseed oil, rather than isolated flax protein. While protein supplements in general are known to support weight loss by increasing satiety and preserving lean muscle mass during calorie restriction, few studies have specifically evaluated flax protein in isolation for this purpose. A 2017 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that flaxseed supplementation modestly reduced body weight and waist circumference in overweight and obese participants, but the form of flaxseed varied (whole, ground, oil). The protein component may contribute, but cannot be isolated as the sole factor. Therefore, while the theoretical basis for flax protein in weight management is supported by general protein research and some flaxseed studies, direct evidence for flax protein alone is limited and further research is needed.
