Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gallocatechin gallate (GCG) is a type of catechin, structurally related to the more widely studied epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and is found in certain teas, especially green tea. The interest in GCG for weight loss stems from its similarity to other tea catechins, which have shown some potential in supporting weight management through mechanisms such as increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation. However, the specific evidence for GCG’s direct effect on weight loss is limited. Most available studies on weight loss and catechins focus on EGCG rather than GCG. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that GCG may inhibit enzymes involved in fat absorption and may have a mild thermogenic effect, similar to EGCG. Human studies evaluating the isolated effect of GCG on weight loss are lacking, and most clinical trials use green tea extracts containing multiple catechins, making it difficult to attribute effects to GCG specifically. Overall, while there is a plausible biochemical rationale and preliminary evidence from related catechins, the direct scientific support for GCG itself as a weight loss agent is weak and more research is needed.
