Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garcinia, particularly Garcinia cambogia, has been widely marketed and used as a weight loss supplement. Its primary active compound, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is thought to inhibit an enzyme called citrate lyase, which is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have investigated Garcinia's efficacy for weight reduction. Some studies have shown modest weight loss effects compared to placebo, but the average benefit is generally small (often less than 2 kg over several weeks or months), and many studies have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, short durations, or inconsistent formulations. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (e.g., Onakpoya et al., 2011, J Obes) conclude that while there may be a statistically significant difference in weight loss, the clinical relevance is doubtful due to the small magnitude of effect and substantial heterogeneity among trials. Reported side effects are generally mild but can include gastrointestinal symptoms. Regulatory bodies and expert panels typically state there is insufficient high-quality evidence to support Garcinia as a reliable or effective weight loss aid. Thus, while the use of Garcinia for weight loss has some scientific exploration, the evidence base is weak, and benefits are likely minimal.
