Evidence supporting the use of: Ginseng, Panax
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax ginseng has been investigated for its potential effects on weight loss and metabolic health. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that ginseng may modestly support weight loss, primarily through mechanisms such as appetite regulation, increased energy expenditure, and improved glucose metabolism. A number of animal studies have demonstrated that ginseng extracts can reduce body weight gain and fat accumulation. Human clinical trials, though limited in size and quality, have shown mixed results. Some small randomized controlled trials have reported slight reductions in body weight or improvements in body mass index (BMI) in overweight or obese individuals taking ginseng supplements compared to placebo, while others found no significant effect.
The proposed mechanisms include modulation of gut microbiota, enhancement of insulin sensitivity, and activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which may promote fat oxidation. However, the overall quality of the evidence is low, with many studies having small sample sizes, short durations, and inconsistent results. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while ginseng shows promise for metabolic health and weight control, more robust and larger-scale clinical trials are needed to draw definitive conclusions. Thus, there is some scientific basis for the use of Panax ginseng to support weight loss, but the evidence is limited and not strong.
