Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine and has primarily been studied for its role in muscle preservation and recovery, especially in populations suffering from muscle wasting or in athletes undergoing intense training. Its potential use in weight loss is linked to its anti-catabolic effects, which may prevent muscle loss during caloric restriction. Some studies suggest that HMB supplementation can help preserve lean body mass during periods of weight loss, potentially leading to a higher proportion of fat loss compared to muscle loss. However, the direct effect of HMB on fat mass reduction is not well established.

The scientific evidence supporting HMB for weight loss is limited and mixed. While some randomized controlled trials have shown slight benefits in preserving muscle mass during calorie deficits, a meta-analysis of clinical studies indicates that HMB supplementation does not result in significant reductions in total body weight or fat mass compared to placebo when used in isolation. Its primary utility appears to be in the context of muscle retention rather than promoting substantial fat loss.

Thus, while there is some scientific rationale for HMB’s use in supporting body composition during weight loss (i.e., minimizing muscle loss), the evidence for its direct efficacy in reducing body weight or fat mass is weak. HMB is not traditionally used for weight loss, and its scientific support for this indication is modest at best.
