Evidence supporting the use of: Hoodia
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hoodia, specifically Hoodia gordonii, has a long history of traditional use by the San people of southern Africa, who reportedly consumed the cactus to suppress hunger and thirst during long hunting trips. This ethnobotanical use has led to its popularity as a weight loss supplement in Western countries. However, scientific evidence supporting Hoodia’s effectiveness for weight loss is minimal and of poor quality. While a few preliminary studies suggested that certain compounds in Hoodia (notably P57) may impact appetite-regulating regions in the brain, these findings have not been robustly replicated in larger, well-controlled human trials. Most clinical research has failed to demonstrate significant appetite suppression or weight loss effects compared to placebo. Additionally, concerns about safety, authenticity, and adulteration of commercial Hoodia products remain prevalent. In summary, while Hoodia’s use as a weight loss aid is rooted in traditional practice, scientific validation is lacking, and the overall quality of evidence is very low.
