Konjac, also known as glucomannan, is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the root of the Amorphophallus konjac plant. There is scientific evidence supporting its use for weight loss, primarily due to its high fiber content, which can promote a feeling of fullness (satiety) and reduce overall calorie intake. Clinical trials and meta-analyses have shown that glucomannan supplementation may lead to modest weight loss in overweight and obese adults when combined with a calorie-restricted diet. For instance, a 2014 systematic review published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition concluded that glucomannan supplementation resulted in significant weight loss compared to placebo, although the effect size was relatively small (typically 1–2 kg over 5–8 weeks). The proposed mechanisms include delayed gastric emptying, reduced absorption of macronutrients, and appetite suppression.

However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some studies showing minimal or no effect. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) acknowledges glucomannan's role in weight loss when used in the context of an energy-restricted diet. Safety concerns are generally minimal, though gastrointestinal side effects like bloating and gas can occur. In summary, while konjac is not a miracle solution, there is reasonable scientific support for its adjunctive use in weight management.
