Rating (out of 5): 2

Millet seed is increasingly included in diets aimed at weight loss, and its use is supported by emerging scientific evidence, albeit limited and preliminary. Millets are a group of small-seeded grasses that are highly nutritious and naturally gluten-free. They are rich in dietary fiber, protein, and essential micronutrients such as magnesium and phosphorus. The high fiber content of millet can promote satiety, slow gastric emptying, and help regulate appetite, leading to reduced calorie intake. Some clinical studies and animal models suggest that millet consumption may improve lipid metabolism, reduce body fat accumulation, and support healthy gut microbiota, all of which can contribute to weight management.

For example, a 2021 systematic review published in Frontiers in Nutrition summarized that millets may contribute to lower body mass index (BMI) and improved metabolic health, though most studies were small and short-term. Additionally, millets have a low glycemic index, which helps prevent rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels—factors that can be beneficial for weight control. However, large-scale, long-term clinical trials specifically evaluating millet’s effect on weight loss in humans are limited. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some preliminary data to support millet’s role in weight management, the evidence is not yet robust or conclusive.
